5 Ways to Promote Your Personal Training or Fitness Business ...

Personal Trainer Push UpsIt is said that you have to spend money to make money, and in the case of business promotion this is generally (but not always) true. Even products that practically market themselves, like the iPhone or iPod, have massive advertising campaigns behind them to ensure that every person on the planet wants to run out and buy them. Of course, you don?t need to spend the millions on advertising that Apple does.

If you?re a personal trainer or you?re running a fitness business (creating workout DVDs and selling related merchandise or running your own gym, for example) you can find means of promotion that don?t necessarily require you to buy air time for advertising on a global scale. What you should do, however, is explore several different avenues of promotion so that you can reach out to the largest possible segment of interested consumers. And here are a few great ways to do just that.

With the new year upon us and seeing where the world didn?t end on 12.21.2012, fitness resolutions are about to blow up. Personal trainers will be booked for the next 3 months, gym memberships attendance will probably double for a month or two, and online health and fitness related searches are sure to increase. Use these tips to take advantage of the hype by getting your brand out into the public eye.

  1. Word of mouth

    Sexy Personal Trainer
For personal trainers and fitness gurus, the very best form of promotion is a brand ambassador. You want your current clientele to talk you up. In some cases, such as fitness model Carrie Pullaro?s (right) personal trainer, the results they achieve will garner the notice of people in their lives, prompting them to ask. But you can certainly help the process along.

For one thing, you could offer clients a free session if they bring in a friend. Or you might encourage them to bring in a group and give everyone a discount. Even if you don?t want to offer deals or freebies, a professional attitude and excellent service will speak for itself. The hope is that your clients will refer you to family, friends, and colleagues as a trusted source, promoting your business for you.

  2. Social media

These days you really can?t talk about business promotion without mentioning the role that social networking accounts play. Some important social media sites that you NEED to be on, include:

    • Facebook ? specifically a Facebook Fan Page for your business
    • Twitter
    • Pinterest
    • Instagram
    • Google+
    • Foursquare
    • StumbleUpon

Whether you are active on these, or other social sites, it?s important to stay current and optimize your accounts so that you can use them to your best advantage. In some cases this could mean pushing discounts and deals through these platforms, or you might offer daily fitness tips or exercise tutorials as added value for clients and a draw for prospective customers. What you shouldn?t do is ignore the potential these forums have to help promote your business.

  3. Apps

There?s no denying that there are already plenty of fitness apps on the market. But whether you?re looking to bring in more clients locally or expand your business outside of your geographic region, creating a fitness app in keeping with your practice could be a great way to increase your brand recognition and boost sales.

  4. Events

Local clients provide the bread and butter for most personal trainers and some other fitness businesses, so promoting locally is a must. A good way to do this is by participating in local events. If there?s a street fair happening, you might want to purchase booth space so you can hand out pamphlets and give demonstrations. This is a great way to shake hands with people in your area who might be seeking your services.

  5. Local promotions

Aside from events, there are a number of ways you can promote your business in the area in which you operate. You can start with store signs that let passersby know when you?re running promotions (like discounts for new clients that sign up after the New Year).

You might also create a mailing list and send out monthly newsletters with fitness tips (although this can also be done through email) or advertise via print, radio, and TV. And you could collaborate with related businesses like nutritionists or diet groups, health spas, or even other fitness facilities (gyms, yoga studios, etc.) in order to share business and ensure that clients have all the resources they need to reach their personal fitness goals.

Don?t miss out on the new year fitness traffic. Do you have any awesome ideas or strategies that you have or will use for your fitness business in 2013? I have about 100 of them, but I need to make time to put them into effect. If you have any great thoughts you want to share, please leave them in a comment below.

Long Distance Relationship? "Don't Lose It All. Time To Get Data ...

Long distance relationship is a frustrating relationship. I know because I was in one with?Eric?during the beginning of our relationship. The insecurities and also commitment is a very huge task to bear while you're in this long distance relationship. I was so grateful and glad that how he always tried to reach me either through the calls, whatsapp, video calls, text messages, etc just to be there for me especially when the time I need him by my side.

It?s always assumed that relationships are blissful ? but wait! It?s not all candies and kisses,?sometimes there a lot of hardship to deal with and it can be really emotionally taunting and?mentally demanding. What?s worse is, pairing the idea of a long distance relationship with?the sad soppy case of losing communication.

What?s going on? They seemed happy.

Although they were going to be far away from each other, they seemed like they were in?it forever but then suddenly everything changed! Did he find someone else? Or is it just a?simple misunderstanding? Relationships are an uphill battle or sometimes a downwards?spiral ? it?s really how you manage it but these two sadly went the wrong way. Who?s that?guy at the end? Does he like her? And does she like him too?

Most importantly, in the case of Amy & Nick?s relationship, it shows that if there is no?data, you?ll lose it all. After all, everything is on the internet now and it costs almost?nothing at all. Just as long as you have data, relationships will go smooth sailing so dial?*128# to sign up for any pack to have it all.

An algal scene

A golden pennate diatom and a green euglenid, Phacus sp., industriously photosynthesising before the slide dries out. Perhaps unexpectedly for its appearance, the diatom can actually move, by secreting mucus to glide on through the raphe (a slit), and often quickly enough to screw up your photography. Luckily, this one was paused at that moment. The colour comes from its plastid, of the ?brown? algal category.

The euglenid?s surface is covered by proteinaceous strips making up its pellicle ? in many species, they slide against each other and enable metaboly, a pattern of movement that makes the euglenid feel ?squishy?. This genus, on the other hand, lacks the sliding ability of its pellicle strips, and sits rigidly in one shape. Inside are a big clear doughnut-shaped starch globule, a red eyespot used for seeking light, and numerous green plastids that were once inherited through secondary endosymbiosis of a green alga. Only a single clade of euglenids is photosynthetic ? the rest have never seen a plastid as anything other than a food item.

Former President Bush still hospitalized

HOUSTON (AP) ? President George H.W. Bush, who has been in a Houston hospital with a lingering cough since November, needs to "build up his energy" before he can be released, doctors said Sunday.

Methodist Hospital spokesman George Kovacik said in an emailed statement that doctors are still optimistic the 88-year-old Bush will make a full recovery, but are being "extra cautious" with his care. Bush is in stable condition, he said.

Bush was hospitalized Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough. Hospital officials have said Bush has been receiving physical therapy to increase his strength.

Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said on Thursday Bush could be released in time for Christmas.

However, Kovacik said Sunday a discharge date has not been set, and it remains unclear whether the 41st president will be able to spend the holiday at home. Kovacik said that could be decided Monday, Christmas Eve.

Andrew Luck has broken the NFL rookie record for yards passing, and rookie kicker Blair Walsh has broken the league mark for 50-yard plus field goals in a season.

On a Sunday featuring a slew of records, Luck topped Cam Newton's year-old mark for yards passing in the first half of Indianapolis' win at Kansas City. Newton's record was 4,051 yards. Luck entered the game needing 74 yards to break the mark. He finished with 205 yards and now has 4,183 yards with a game against Kansas City remaining in the regular season.

"Yes, it definitely means something," Luck said of the record. "And after the season I'll have a chance to look back and reflect on it. It's nice; obviously it's nicer to be in the playoffs but it's nice to have a couple records, which I'm sure will be broken in the next year."

Minnesota's Walsh kicked a 56-yard field goal in the second quarter against Houston, giving him a record ninth field goal of 50 yards or more.

Also, Redskins kicker Kai Forbath set the NFL record for consecutive field goals to begin a career with 17 straight. He had field goals of 45 and 42 yards in the first half against the Eagles. New Orleans' Garrett Hartley had 16 straight.

On Saturday, Detroit's Calvin Johnson broke Jerry Rice's single-season yards receiving record, and is at 1,892 with a game left. He also became the only NFL player with 100 yards receiving in eight straight games, and with 10-plus receptions in four straight games.

Useful Tips On Successful Family Portrait Photography ? Arts and ...

People do not think about any novel application of the service of a professional portrait photographer other then when they have a birthday, a centenary or a death in the family. We are equally hapless and unimaginative at thinking new occasions or making them, but we will do a little better and think of techniques using which you can sabotage the photography sessions and give your photographer a few brain tumors!

There are millions of expert opinions and tips on family portraits photography, but not many on how you can destroy the day! Here is how you can force the photographer into running away, not to mention flush your money down the drain. Take all the kids in your family to a photo tour! And pinch them when they get naughty and if they cry, ignore them. In minutes, the photographer will have bailed out and your family portrait photography session will have ended without one single shot being snapped.

Let the photographer know that you are the family expert on matters of photography. Argue on every point and have your way. Family portrait photography Melbourne might be the bread and butter the poor bloke wielding the SLR, but they do not know that you have read every single book about photography. Let them have a taste of your knowledge.Do not let the occasion fool you. Even if it is your grandfather?s birthday and he might not live any longer to see another one, make sure that your ego is bigger than the occasion. The photographer might want you to stand near your sister-in-law, but little does he know about the relation you share with her. Refuse to have anything to do with your family foes. If possible start a civil war right on the sets while the photographer stares at all of you in wild amazement.

Be the funny guy. Every person in the image should have a big smile right? Yeah. So be the funny fellow and have everybody in splits and rolling onto the floor with laughter. When they manage to subdue their pangs of ecstasy, give it another go. This will look much better if it was organized after your granny passed away recently or something of equivalent solemnity! Just before the family portrait photography Melbourne session begins, call the photographer a nincompoop and tell him that you are going to pay less than what you agreed to. This will snap even the most resilient of professional and have them looking for the exit sign. One can always check http://photographersinc.co.nz/ for more useful tips.

Lieberman fears country may go over 'fiscal cliff'

President Barack Obama speaks to reporters about the fiscal cliff in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, Friday, Dec. 21, 2012. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

(AP) ? Senators bickered Sunday over who's to blame for lurching the country toward a year-end "fiscal cliff," bemoaning the lack of a deal days before the deadline but bridging no differences in the debate.

With the collapse Thursday of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, Sen. Joe Lieberman said "it's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not," meaning that higher taxes for most Americans and painful federal agency budget cuts would be in line to go ahead.

"If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American," said Lieberman, a Connecticut independent.

Wyoming Sen. Jon Barrasso, a member of the GOP leadership, predicted that the new year would come without an agreement, and he faulted the White House.

"I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff," he said.

Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, was incredulous at Barrasso's assertion that 'there is only one person that can provide the leadership" on such a matter vital to the nation's interests.

"There are 535 of us that can provide leadership. There are 435 in the House, 100 in the Senate and there is the president, all of us have a responsibility here," he said. "And, you know what is happening? What is happening is the same old tired blame game. He said/she said. I think the American people are tired of it. What they want to hear is what is the solution?"

No solution seemed any nearer, with Obama and Congress on a short holiday break. Congress is expected to be back at work Thursday and Obama in the White House after a few days in Hawaii.

"It is time to get back to the table," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington."

Predicted Lieberman: "We're going to spend New Year's Eve here I believe."

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extend George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

"The truth of the matter is, if we do fall off the cliff after the president is inaugurated, he'll come back, propose just what he proposed ... in leaving Washington and we'll end up adopting it, but why should we put the markets in such turmoil and the people misunderstanding or lack of confidence," said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. "Why not go ahead and act now?

Obama's announcement late Friday suggested that a smaller deal may rest in the Senate, given the failure of Boehner's option in the House.

"The ball is now clearly with the Senate," said Lieberman.

He said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky "have the ability to put this together again and pass something. It won't be a big, grand bargain to take care of the total debt, but they can do some things that will avoid the worst consequences going over the fiscal cliff."

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said she expects "it is going to be a patch because in four days we can't solve everything."

It was only a week ago when news emerged that Obama and Boehner had significantly narrowed their differences. Both were offering a cut in taxes for most Americans, an increase for a relative few and cuts of roughly $1 trillion in spending over a year. Also included was a scaling back of future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients ? a concession on the president's part as much as agreeing to higher tax rates was for the speaker.

Lieberman was on CNN's "State of the Union," while Barrasso and Conrad appeared on "Fox News Sunday." Klobuchar and Isakson were on "Fox News Sunday," while Hutchison was on CBS' "Face the Nation."

New technology may enable earlier cancer diagnosis: Nanoparticles amplify tumor signals, making them much easier to detect in urine

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Finding ways to diagnose cancer earlier could greatly improve the chances of survival for many patients. One way to do this is to look for specific proteins secreted by cancer cells, which circulate in the bloodstream. However, the quantity of these biomarkers is so low that detecting them has proven difficult.

A new technology developed at MIT may help to make biomarker detection much easier. The researchers, led by Sangeeta Bhatia, have developed nanoparticles that can home to a tumor and interact with cancer proteins to produce thousands of biomarkers, which can then be easily detected in the patient's urine.

This biomarker amplification system could also be used to monitor disease progression and track how tumors respond to treatment, says Bhatia, the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT.

"There's a desperate search for biomarkers, for early detection or disease prognosis, or looking at how the body responds to therapy," says Bhatia, who is also a member of MIT's David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. She adds that the search has been complicated because genomic studies have revealed that many cancers, such as breast cancer, are actually groups of several diseases with different genetic signatures.

The MIT team, working with researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, described the new technology in a paper appearing in Nature Biotechnology on Dec. 16. Lead author of the paper is Gabriel Kwong, a postdoc in MIT's Institute for Medical Engineering and Science and the Koch Institute.

Amplifying cancer signals

Cancer cells produce many proteins not found in healthy cells. However, these proteins are often so diluted in the bloodstream that they are nearly impossible to identify. A recent study from Stanford University researchers found that even using the best existing biomarkers for ovarian cancer, and the best technology to detect them, an ovarian tumor would not be found until eight to 10 years after it formed.

"The cell is making biomarkers, but it has limited production capacity," Bhatia says. "That's when we had this 'aha' moment: What if you could deliver something that could amplify that signal?"

Serendipitously, Bhatia's lab was already working on nanoparticles that could be put to use detecting cancer biomarkers. Originally intended as imaging agents for tumors, the particles interact with enzymes known as proteases, which cleave proteins into smaller fragments.

Cancer cells often produce large quantities of proteases known as MMPs. These proteases help cancer cells escape their original locations and spread uncontrollably by cutting through proteins of the extracellular matrix, which normally holds cells in place.

The researchers coated their nanoparticles with peptides (short protein fragments) targeted by several of the MMP proteases. The treated nanoparticles accumulate at tumor sites, making their way through the leaky blood vessels that typically surround tumors. There, the proteases cleave hundreds of peptides from the nanoparticles, releasing them into the bloodstream.

The peptides rapidly accumulate in the kidneys and are excreted in the urine, where they can be detected using mass spectrometry.

This new system is an exciting approach to overcoming the problem of biomarker scarcity in the body, says Sanjiv Gambhir, chairman of the Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. "Instead of being dependent on the body to naturally shed biomarkers, you're sampling the site of interest and causing biomarkers that you engineered to be released," says Gambhir, who was not part of the research team.

Distinctive signatures

To make the biomarker readings as precise as possible, the researchers designed their particles to express 10 different peptides, each of which is cleaved by a different one of the dozens of MMP proteases. Each of these peptides is a different size, making it possible to distinguish them with mass spectrometry. This should allow researchers to identify distinct signatures associated with different types of tumors.

In this study, the researchers tested their nanoparticles' ability to detect the early stages of colorectal cancer in mice, and to monitor the progression of liver fibrosis.

Liver fibrosis is an accumulation of scarring in response to liver injury or chronic liver disease. Patients with this condition have to be regularly monitored by biopsy, which is expensive and invasive, to make sure they are getting the right treatment. In mice, the researchers found that the nanoparticles could offer much more rapid feedback than biopsies.

They also found that the nanoparticles could accurately reveal the early formation of colorectal tumors. In ongoing studies, the team is studying the particles' ability to measure tumor response to chemotherapy and to detect metastasis.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Kathy and Curt Marble Cancer Research Fund.

Property Security Common Property Security Items 3 Of The Greatest

Anybody who owns a House or lives in an apartment requirements to be concerned about their Property security. House security Items that deal with burglary prevention have turn out to be enormously Common-amounting to nearly $60 billion a year in sales. The cause is really fairly easy. Pretty much 1 out of 5 houses is topic to burglary on an annual basis. In between the worth of Items taken and the harm carried out to the Household, the total amounts to close to $4000.

Does not it make sense then to invest some cash on security Goods that can assist with burglary prevention? Burglar alarms are essentially quite inexpensive, particularly compared to the $4000. But there are other Property security Merchandise that you could take a appear at to enable with burglary prevention. Here we?re going to talk about the top 3 most Well-liked House security Goods that can all support to enhance your Residence security, and they do not have to expense you an arm and a leg.

Movement seen in 'fiscal cliff' talks

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Big differences remain, but there is finally movement in long-stalled talks on avoiding the "fiscal cliff."

House Speaker John Boehner is offering $1 trillion in higher tax revenue over 10 years and an increase in the top tax rate on people making more than $1 million a year. He's also offering a large enough extension in the government's borrowing cap to fund the government for one year before the issue must be revisited ? conditioned on Obama agreeing to the $1 trillion in cuts.

The offer, made Friday after a long impasse between Boehner, R-Ohio, and President Barack Obama, calls for about $450 billion in revenue from increasing the top rate on million-dollar-plus income from 35 percent to the Clinton-era rate of 39.6 percent.

The additional revenue required to meet the $1 trillion target would be collected through a rewrite of the tax code next year and by slowing the inflation adjustments made to tax brackets.

In return, Boehner is asking for $1 trillion in spending cuts from government benefit programs like Medicare. Those cuts would defer most of a painful set of across-the-board spending cuts set to slash many domestic programs and the Pentagon budget by 8-9 percent, starting in January.

Boehner's proposal was described Sunday by officials familiar with it. They required anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.

Boehner also continues to press for a less generous inflation adjustment for Social Security benefits, a move endorsed by many budget hawks. Obama and Democrats on last year's deficit "supercommittee" endorsed the idea in offers made last year, but they're more reluctant now.

The new inflation adjustment would also raise about $70 billion over a decade in new revenues because tax brackets would rise more slowly for inflation, driving people more quickly into higher tax brackets.

The increased optimism come as time is running out before the adjournment of Congress. Tax rates on all workers go up in January, and $109 billion worth of across-the-board spending cuts begin to take effect then as well. Taken together with the expiration of extended jobless benefits and a 2-percentage-point break in Social Security payroll taxes, the combination of austerity steps threatens to send the economy back into recession.

The burst of optimism is tempered by the caution that the remaining steps to reaching a deal ? particularly how much to cut Medicare and whether to impose the new, less generous inflation adjustment to Social Security ? are difficult. Then comes the job of selling it to a polarized Congress, where GOP conservatives have been railing against higher tax rates for months as sure to cost jobs and hurt small business, and Democrats have taken a harder line against cost curbs to Medicare.

But it appears clear there is momentum as White House and congressional aides worked through the weekend.

"Apparently they have been making good progress since Boehner made (the offer)," said a Capitol Hill Democratic aide.

The movement comes as an increasing number of Republicans have called for a tactical retreat that would hand Obama a victory on his longstanding campaign promise to raise taxes on households making more than $250,000 a year. That increase, combined with an increase in the tax rate on investment income from 15 percent to 20 percent, would raise about $800 billion in tax revenue over a decade.

In that context, Boehner's move could be seen as an attempt to get spending cuts linked to the rate increase rather than giving them up and getting nothing in return. Judging from the numbers, Boehner is also willing to allow tax rates on investment income to increase for high-end income and allow the reinstatement of curbs on the value of exemptions and itemized deductions for high-income earners.

Still, the Boehner offer is sure to cause unrest among many conservative Republicans dead set against raising tax rates at all.

Obama has offered $600 billion in spending cuts over a decade, including $350 billion from federal health care programs and $250 billion from other cuts to domestic programs like farm subsidies and the pension program for federal workers, and through sales of used federal property.

Obama and Boehner met Thursday in a session described as "frank" by both sides. Boehner's offer and a follow-up phone call came the next day, amid increasing speculation that Republicans might move on to a plan B in which they would give Obama a win on tax rates for upper-bracket earners and renew the fight when increasing the government's borrowing cap ? which needs to be done soon, probably in February.

Boehner's $1 trillion cut proposal would be paired with a comparable increase in the borrowing cap, enough to keep the government borrowing for about a year. But if the cuts are smaller, the debt limit increase would be smaller as well.

"Our position has not changed. Any debt limit increase would require cuts and reforms of a greater amount," said Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck.

But Boehner is showing flexibility on how quickly to implement any increase in the Medicare eligibility age, recognizing the Democratic opposition to the idea. Republicans have been cautious on that front as well; they have regularly exempted those close to retirement age from their Medicare cuts.

Obama originally sought $1.6 trillion in new tax revenue over a decade and has since revised that to $1.4 trillion. He would probably go lower, a decision fueled in part by resistance from Democratic allies in the Senate to Obama proposals like taxing capital gains and income at rates equal to earned income.

TS params. for dummies? - Techtalk Speaker Building, Audio, Video ...

  1. Default TS params. for dummies?

I've read the books and can do the calculations if need be and all that but to my limited understanding they are just numbers in an equation... what do they actually MEAN? I see people talking about OB, Dipoles etc. and saying whatever driver is suited or not suited for it because of whichever Qxx, or talking about infinite baffle subs and lots of other things that aren't springing to memory. I'm just wondering what you guys are reading into them that you can make these deductions of the drivers capabilities off of a single number and further more WHY that is the case. This came about because I want to replace the drivers in my car, I'm not really to sold on what is traditionally available for cars. It all seems so gimicky and flashy, and component sets come with passive XO's. I'm not an XO guru or anything but I've waded in those waters enough to ask how can they presume to design an XO with no regard to any diffraction effects that would probably be fairly nasty being mounted in a car and probably different in every case. Plus who knows what axis the listeners ears will be when installed. Then there's phase alignment, and on and on. I'm not keen on paying a premium for a XO that might not be much better than a text book version. I'll measure and do my own thanks.

Sorry for the off topic rant. Point is I trust the drivers we deal with here much more because they have been used and tested to death and there is lots of info on them and what they sound like, not just "they rattle my mirrors" or "I can hear then down the block" as the typical mentality goes in the mobile audio forums. I need to know how to usefully interpret the TS params to know what will work. For example the 6.5" in my doors obviously use the door cavity as an enclosure but it'll be a non-ideal and leaky enclosure to be sure and a rather large one too. Also I have a RSS210 which seems like a good fit to replace the 8" sub in my back deck but how do I know it will work well being sort of infinite baffle using the trunk (leaky too I'm sure) as a way too large sealed enclosure.

  3. Default Re: TS params. for dummies?

Concerning t/s parameters, see if this helps: http://www.diysubwoofers.org/definitions.htm#tsparam

Concerning car audio crossovers, they tend to be fairly generic in nature, and I always felt they were more about power management (i.e. keep damaging low frequencies away from the tweeter, and perhaps keep high frequencies that fall within the breakup zone away from the woofer) than FR adjustment - that's what you've got EQ for .

For door woofers, IMO it's the combination of Fs and Qts that counts, e.g. if the driver has low Qts, it should also have low Fs.

Concerning infinite baffle mounting, IMO it's more about how the driver behaves under large signals, which t/s parameters aren't going to accurately describe. If the cone seems to go "out of control" when the volume's turned up (or worse, the suspension actually allows the former to hit the back plate) , then it's probably not a good match for infinite baffle mounting in a car audio environment.

  4. Default Re: TS params. for dummies?

    Q's?

Well, there's mechanical Q (Qms) which is said to be a driver's mechanical propensity to resonate. To relate it to cars (suspensions, actually, and not really all that different), if you had 2 cars of the same weight (mass), and one had soft springs and the other VERY stiff springs; if you "bounce" each of them, the stiff springs won't oscillate too many times compared to the softer springs. For a driver, this number changes with changes in cone mass (dia. and material, and really includes the mass of ALL moving components, like the voice coil and its "former") and the stiffness of the suspension (typically the spider and the surround).

Electrical Q (Qes), the driver's electrical "resonance factor", is related to the electrical "motor" strength (magnet size and configuration, and its relationship to the VC) and how well it can control (or "damp") the moving cone. Small motor systems can't control a massive cone with a soft suspension very well. It's like having worn out shock absorbers on your car. A strong motor has a low Qes (and subsequently, a lower "Q", or Qts) and can be a highly damped system. With VERY low Q drivers, you sometimes lose the ability to provide deep bass. Little (cheap) magnets are common on high "Q" (typically cheap) drivers. Goldwood comes to mind.

"Qts" is the "Q" of the "system" (a mathematical relationship between Qms and Qes). A number we can use in box design that takes both the mechanical AND electrical resonance factors into consideration.

Putting a driver in a closed box raises its Q, and yet this is another Q, Qtc. The Q (a.k.a. "Quality factor") is NOW describing a given driver placed into a box of a given volume. Since (for mathematical reasons) a closed box "Q" (Qtc) of 0.707 (half the sq.rt. of 2) is most often considered a nominal "aim point", only drivers with Qts values BELOW 0.70 will be able to achieve 0.707 "in box". Drivers with higher Qs (like many Goldwoods) can work better NOT in a box, since the box only raises their Q even higher. These are typically the kinds of drivers that get used in auto sound, because they've got the right "Q".

Drivers for a vented box work best with a Q (Qts) in the range of 0.30 up into the 0.40's (SOMEtimes, even into the 0.50's), but higher Qs in a vented box most often can not avoid a "roller coaster" rolloff response.

  5. Default Re: TS params. for dummies?

In a car, you want a Low Fs if possible, and ideally a Qts of about 1.0 for in-door drivers. The RSS210 will not like an IB setup, as its suspension is awfully compliant. Qts = 1.0 is best for this as well.

If you have a higher Qts, then you get one-notey bass, or bass that peaks and is really muddy without anything in terms of low extension.

FWIW- many people love the Silver Flute drivers in car doors. They apparently have the best compromise of in-door speakers.

    My 2c,
    Wolf

  6. Default Re: TS params. for dummies?

Q is defined as the amount of 'damping' that the mechanical, electrical, and total contain. For instance- a higher Qms is a tighter suspension. Qes works the other way, More Qes is a lossier electrical damping.

I find that Qts of up to 0.6 can be used in a vented box- in most cases. (Most people prefer mid 0.4X to be optimal.) And you can vent Qts of 1.0 if you can make the driver work in that alignment. There are so many factors to play with.

    Later,
    Wolf

To be a little more precise, Qms is the measure of mechanical loss associated with a driver suspension. Qes is a measure of electrical loss. Whether or not a suspension is "tight" refers to its compliance - not the degree of mechanical energy loss. Reading posts here and at other DIY sites, there are a lot of generalizations about whether a driver is good for a particular loading type or not as if a clear line were drawn in the sand. A more wise approach is to focus more on the impedance plot of a driver under test. One should think of it as an energy storage curve and decide whether or not the intended loading mechanism will be efficient in converting that stored energy to acoustical energy.

One should also keep in mind that the behavior of mechanical and electrical losses changes significantly with applied signal level and that T/S parameters are derived from a standard that is set at essentially 1V applied signal. For example, at low signal voltage, low frequencies a low compliance woofer is likely to have higher electrical losses than a high compliance one since very little of the applied energy results in deflection of the driver diaphragm and hence there's very little mechanical energy storage. The voice coil becomes essentially a transformer. On the flip end, at very high excursions and high signal levels, the high compliance driver's suspension loses its ability to store more energy and the voice coil winds up (pun intended) acting once again like a transformer.

As I see it, new designers are better served by focusing on Vas (driver compliance volume) and building enclosures that are reasonably close to that parameter as the primary or fundamental consideration. Whether or not a sealed, vented, or infinite baffle type loading is used should be a secondary consideration that affects ultimate response. To me, if the enclosure's volume is not reasonably close to the driver's compliance volume, you're not likely to get an "optimal" result.

    YMMV, of course

  8. Default Re: TS params. for dummies?

Q as a term, equals damping. It's damping in xover filters, it's damping in notches. All are using Q as a term.
Higher losses would be less damping, plain and simple.

Maybe I misunderstand your meaning, but you appear to be saying the box should add the same amount of 'spring' to the cone as the suspension does. Seems to me for drivers with a Qts of over .7, this would not be a good thing.

  10. Default Re: TS params. for dummies?

    Ryan,

Much of the sense of what the T/S parameters mean in terms of the possibilities or limitations of a particular driver simply come from a lot of experience building boxes and/or modeling designs. You might try using a modeling program and altering the various T/S parameters of the driver in increments to see what effect they have on different cabinet designs.

  11. Default Re: TS params. for dummies?

Maybe I misunderstand your meaning, but you appear to be saying the box should add the same amount of 'spring' to the cone as the suspension does. Seems to me for drivers with a Qts of over .7, this would not be a good thing.

Air within the enclosure effectively has a mass and spring associated with it. If the spring constant of the suspension is vastly different from that of the enclosure's air, obtaining a more perfect "counterbalance" or anti resonance to cancel the fundamental resonance of the driver will be more difficult. You can use the spring aspect of the air volume to increase effective damping but that is not the only way to reduce stored energy associated with resonance to get a more ideal response. Adding stuffing to a sealed or vented box also increases mechanical loss that can flatten out or reduce the Q.

If you compared the second harmonic distortion for a driver in a sealed box with volume much lower than Vas to a setup with internal volume closer to Vas that uses stuffing, you'll find the larger internal volume version has less distortion in the output FWIW. The differential equations that define the motion of a damped oscillator also back this up.

I'm only talking about what is "optimal" or for me, the optimal approach. Anyone can modify the approach as they see fit. For me, I use the Vas as a baseline parameter and work out from there.

with no regard to any diffraction effects T/S parameters are not involved with aspects such as diffraction ( as you probably know )

Gunman fires shots outside California mall, no one hit

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A gunman caused panic at a southern California mall on Saturday when he fired at least 50 shots in a parking lot outside a department store, but hit no one and was taken into custody, police said.

The incident at the Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach - which came a day after a man killed 27 people and then himself in a shooting rampage in Connecticut - caused shoppers to flee into store dressing rooms, according to local broadcast reports.

"A male was shooting a weapon in the air and at the ground, standing by a vehicle," Newport Beach police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said.

Police said they had taken the man, 42, into custody. They did not immediately release his name or say what charges he might face for the incident.

No one was wounded, but one person sustained minor injuries fleeing the area on foot, police said.

The incident in Newport Beach, which is 35 miles south of Los Angeles, also came four days after a shooter at an Oregon mall killed two people and himself.

Baseball: A-Rod says he'll have surgery in 'mid-January'

MIAMI ? Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees says he will have surgery on his injured left hip in ?mid-January.?

Speaking Saturday at a breakfast he hosted for about 150 high school players competing in his annual Miami tournament, Rodriguez spoke for several minutes about his experiences growing up in South Florida.

He then asked the players for questions and got only one, about the date of his surgery.

The Yankees announced earlier this month that Rodriguez needs surgery to correct a torn labrum and other problems with his left hip. He could miss up to six months.

All The World Is Staged In Westchester Real Estate | The Bronxville ...

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Interior designer and home stager Birgit Anich, who works in homes throughout Westchester County, offers a simple question: ?If you walk into a bakery and see several cakes displayed, which one will you choose: the beautifully frosted one that catches your eye and makes you want to take a bite out of it right there or the plain one in the corner??

If the cake with the best frosting wins, the same reasoning, she said, can apply to buying a home. Home-staging ? the art of preparing a home for sale by literally staging an appealing setting ? has become an integral part of the real estate business.

Houses that have been professionally staged sell on average 73 percent faster than un-staged houses, according to a study by the Real Estate Staging Association. New York real estate guru Barbara Corcoran said staged houses sell for an average of 5 to 10 percent higher than un-staged ones.

?Vacant houses are even harder to sell and staging is as critical even if they are new construction,? Anich said.

A trained interior designer and certified home stager, Anich recently won a Home Builders Association of Connecticut award for best interior design for her designs in a Fairfield County, Conn. home.

Her experience in both staging and interior design places Anich strategically in the real estate theater.

?While interior design is about the homeowner's lifestyle and tastes, staging is lifestyle merchandising and marketing the property to appeal to target buyers," she said.

Staging and interior design are similar fields, she said, but they demand different approaches in design, reasoning and decisions.

Anich said she has had an interest in home design since she was a child, when she began drawing floor plans of spaces she found appealing. When she was a teenager, she re-worked her parents? architect?s floor plans for a house they were building, and her parents implemented her suggestions, augmenting those of the architect.

Her formidable artistic and spatial skills, however, translate into something more basic for home buyers.

?First and foremost, people purchase a home based on emotion and then justify their decisions rationally,? she said.

Staging, she said, creates those emotional connections.

And that?s how a home gets sold. It?s a piece of (frosted) cake.
