London regains crown as most expensive market for office space

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - London elbowed its way past Hong Kong to regain the title as the world's most expensive market in which to rent office space, while Rio de Janeiro jumped to the No. 3 spot from No. 8, according to a report by global real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield.

It was the first time since 2008 that London took the top spot. Competition for the scarce high quality office space in London fueled office rents by 2 percent in the city's West End bolstering rents sufficiently to leapfrog over Hong Kong, according to the report on Tuesday.

Office rents in the West End are expected to continue to grow as the economy improves, Cushman & Wakefield said.

At 2,137 euros S$3,600 per square meter, London's occupancy cost, which includes taxes and charges for cleaning and other services, are more than twice those of Paris, New York and Moscow.

Rounding out the top 10 most expensive office markets at the start of 2013 compared with 2012 were:

* No. 4 Connaught Place, New Delhi; up from No 5

* No. 5 Tokyo central business district, 5 Central Wards; down from No. 3

* No. 6 Moscow central business district; down from No. 4

* No. 7 Beijing central business district; down from No. 6

* No. 8 New York, Midtown, Madison and Fifth avenues; down from No. 7

* No. 9 Sydney central business district; unchanged

* No. 10 Paris central business district; unchanged

As the PlayStation 4 Makes Its Debut, Sony Needs to Provide a Satisfactory "Why"

After an unusually long console cycle, we're now just a day away from the reveal of the PlayStation 4. Sony hasn't been especially coy about what the purpose of tomorrow's event is, though it has been reluctant to provide any information that could clue us in on its plans for its next home console. Besides the sorts of things Sony can't hide, like domain registrations and its acquisition of Gaikai, there has been no shortage of leaks and reports to give us some sense of what to expect tomorrow, as well as some ideas for what Sony needs to accomplish. Put simply, there needs to be a recurring theme throughout tomorrow's event as it makes its various announcements, and it involves answering one simple question: "Why?"
The controller is one aspect of the PS4 that has been making headlines recently after a photo showing an early prototype began making its way around the web. An internal speaker, a newly designed d-pad, and concave analog sticks are among the differences it features, but two other additions are the potential difference-makers: a touchpad and built-in PlayStation Move support. As you'd expect, some have written these off as mere gimmicks, and while they might end up being correct in that assessment, I'm interested in seeing what developers can do with them. Nobody wants either Move or the touchpad used in games just for the sake of doing so. Yet subtle implementations that accent traditional controls, or games built around these features (think Flower with Sixaxis), can be worthwhile and justify the existence of these so-called gimmicks.

FIFA confirms goal-line tech will be used at the 2014 World Cup

FIFA gives referees 'final word' on goalline technology, defeats point of goalline technology

FIFA's frosty relationship with the future might just be thawing, after Soccer's governing body announced that it will use goal-line technology. After a successful trial at last year's Club World Cup, the organization will use electronic refereeing at the 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup. That said, the body is still insisting that human officials will have the final say -- despite evidence to suggest that's not a very good idea.

Twitter Is Testing A New Advertising Card For Lead Generation

twitter advertising cardTwitter is testing a new ad unit that gives direct marketers a way to generate leads directly from tweets. You can see an example of the unit in this tweet promoting Twitter's small business guide. Not only is there a small image promoting the guide, but if you're logged in, it also shows a "Get it now" button. When you hit the button, you don't get asked for a phone number or email address ? instead, you get a message saying that "Twitter Advertising will reach out soon." Presumably, the advertiser will get a list of interested Twitter accounts.

Complicated profile of Newtown shooter

Accused Newtown shooter Adam Lanza was spending more time alone in the months leading up to the mass shooting as his mother, Nancy Lanza, attempted to encourage him to be independent despite his mental disabilities, a Hartford Courant/Frontline investigation has found. In a new documentary called "Raising Adam Lanza," which airs Tuesday night on PBS, reporters from the Courant attempt to retrace the steps taken by Nancy and Adam in the years leading up to the shooting, complicating the picture that has occasionally appeared in the media of Nancy as a gun obsessed mother who was in denial about her son's mental challenges.

Adam is believed to have shot his mother four times in the head as she slept on Dec. 14 before shooting his way into Sandy Hook Elementary, where he attended school as a child, and killing 20 children and six women. He then took his own life.

Frontline and The Hartford Courant provided Yahoo News with several previously unpublished childhood and teenage photos of Adam Lanza they uncovered in their investigation.

The 20-year-old had been spending more time alone in his mother's $500,000 home in the affluent Connecticut suburb in the months leading up the shooting, Courant reporters Alaine Griffin and Josh Kovner found. Adam's social world gradually began shrinking after he left Newtown High School at the age of 16 to enroll in a nearby college, where he made As and Bs before withdrawing there, as well. Since 2010, Adam had not attended school.

Between 2010 and 2012, Nancy took Adam to nearby gun ranges to practice shooting. Nancy purchased four firearms, including the Bushmaster semi-automatic rifle Adam is believed to have used in the attack, during the same period. Her friends say Nancy used target practice as a way to bond with her withdrawn son. Police also uncovered thousands of dollars worth of violent video games in the Lanzas' home. Police believe Adam may have been inspired by the video games he played in the attack, since he changed the magazines of his weapons more frequently than was necessary, Frontline reported. Late Sunday, the Courant also reported that Adam may have felt that he was in direct competition with Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik, based on news articles about Breivik's 2011 crime they found in the Lanzas' home.

In the months before the attack, Nancy took frequent trips and left Adam at home unsupervised--including on one trip this past Thanksgiving--in an attempt to make him more independent.

Her friends say Nancy is the forgotten 27th victim that day.

"She's been described as some sort of gun nut or survivalist and this other misconception that she was a bad mother," her friend John Bergquist told Frontline. But he said her life "revolved around caring for Adam."

Adam was diagnosed at a young age with sensory integration disorder, a medically controversial diagnosis that meant Adam had trouble coping with bright lights, loud noises, and knowing when he was in pain. Later, when he was in middle school, Adam was also diagnosed with Asperger's, a condition related to autism that can make social interaction challenging. (Medical experts cautioned that autism disorders are not associated with violent behavior.)

A friend of Nancy?s remembered that when Adam was just six years old, he did not like to be touched. If children his age touched them, he recoiled or became upset. "He was angry with them," Marvin LaFontaine, Nancy's friend, told Frontline. Richard Novia, who co-founded the tech club Adam joined while he attended Newtown High School, told Frontline Adam would have "episodes" as a teen where he would completely withdraw from the world, sometimes sitting in a corner, motionless.

Nancy raised Adam and his older brother in their Newtown home on her own after she and her husband separated in 2001. In 2009, the couple officially divorced, and Adam abruptly cut off contact with his father in 2010 for reasons that are unclear.

Nancy's friends said she was planning on moving to either Washington or North Carolina to enroll Adam in college again, so that he could get a degree in history.

Marissa Mayer: Being mom, CEO 'takes a lot of focus'

By Eun Kyung Kim, TODAY contributor

Marissa Mayer, the Yahoo! CEO and president who famously returned to work two weeks after giving birth last fall, said her job and baby are all she has time for these days.

TODAY

Marissa Mayer came on TODAY Wednesday, and talked motherhood and work.

?There?s not a lot of room for anything else,? she said Wednesday on TODAY. ?Overall, I?ve been having a terrific time with both being a mother and with being a CEO.?

Mayer was named Yahoo! CEO last July, along with the news that she also was six-months pregnant. She then ran into controversy for her decision to come back to work only two weeks after giving birth to her son, now four months old.

TODAY

Marissa Mayer is the country's youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

?I wouldn?t have missed a minute of either experience. They both are great,? she said. ?It does take a lot of focus. You need to make sure you?re really prioritizing that.?

At 37, Mayer is the youngest chief executive of a Fortune 500 company. She appeared on TODAY to unveil a new design for the Yahoo! home page.

?I?ve had a ton of fun coming into the company,? she told TODAY?s Savannah Guthrie.

She said she spends her attention at work focused on Yahoo's extremely loyal users. She spends less time on the public?s attention to her as a role model for working mothers.

?I haven?t spent a lot of time thinking looking at it or even thinking on it. I?ve really been focused on the products, what we need to do,? she said.?
