Jacksonville Journal: Police union says no to proposed pension changes

The Jacksonville police union has told the city it won't be returning to the table to discuss proposed changes to officer pensions, saying the city breached the collective bargaining agreement by skipping an Oct. 31 meeting.

City negotiators didn't show up to that meeting after the union team left a meeting that morning with union President Nelson Cuba saying the talks were a waste of time. "Take me to court," he said. "I'm done with this."

The union has long maintained that it is contractually barred from negotiating pensions.

City labor lawyer Derrel Chatmon said he was "astonished" at the union's missive and asked the union to let the city know by Thursday night if it wishes to resume negotiations.

Duskin, 42, died Oct. 23 of wounds received from small-arms fire in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

Duskin was an Orange Park native. His father said the public is welcome to attend the service.
