US president begins Asia tour in Thailand

Mr Obama will meet with the Thai Prime Minister as well as the nation's revered King.

He is due to arrive in Cambodia on Monday after making an historic visit to Burma.

Mr Obama decided to make the trip to Burma, the first by a sitting US president, to reward and further encourage political developments by the new reformist government there.

However the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, which describes the Muslim Rohingya minority as victims of "genocide", has urged Mr Obama to pressure the Burmese Government to stop the ethnic violence.

Mr Obama's aides have signalled that the president will speak out on human rights while on his Asia tour.

They highlighted his intent to express "grave concerns" to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen over his government's rights record and the need for political reform.

The president's last stop will be the East Asia Summit in Cambodia where he will meet with world leaders including Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
